By Wrecked for the Ordinary
Something’s not right in the world. Something is truly broken, and you sense that you may have at least a piece of what’s required to bring about healing.
In the process, you learn more about yourself, about what Jesus meant when he said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” In pursuit of justice, you find yourself realizing that you are just as much in need of grace as the homeless person that you are sharing your food with.
You begin to believe that you may need the poor or the destitute more than they need you. You’re learning what it means to be humble and why Jesus calls his sheep to take care of the thirsty, hungry, naked, and imprisoned. Instead of offering to pray for the poor, you are now pleading with the poor to pray for you. Because maybe they “get” something that you don’t.
You also realize that some problems can’t be explained away with nice-sounding theology; sometimes, God’s will is for us to get in the thick of the mess and experience some of his broken heart for a broken (but healing) creation.
And that very act may be what brings about our own healing.
Do you have a social justice story that changed your life — how you viewed the world, the God who made it, and the people in it? We want to hear about it.
Send your submissions to editor@wreckedfortheordinary.com. Submissions should adhere to general submission policy. The winner will receive a free copy of Simple Spirituality by Chris Heuertz, and all finalists will be posted on Wrecked’s Social Justice column.
If you submit a piece and don’t hear back from us or see it posted with in four weeks of submitting it, you can assume that we will not use it.
Contest ends June 30!
